Idrissa Diop

Idrissa Diop operated as one of the understated forces shaping African music from behind the curtain, contributing both directly and more often indirectly to a substantial share of Senegal’s current musical landscape. Long before Dakar emerged as a focal point for international audiences, he worked the city’s club circuit as a percussionist in several modest ensembles, where he typically handled the majority of the arrangements and wove jazz, funk, and Afro-beat elements into longstanding local traditions. Fela served as a personal inspiration for Diop, who would later channel political energy toward supporting the Nigerian icon. During one such performance of these evolving styles, the rising Youssou N’Dour took notice and subsequently commissioned several pieces, thereby opening the pathway that carried Diop onto the global stage. After relocating to France along with many other Senegalese musicians seeking broader opportunities, Diop assembled the African jazz-rock fusion outfit Sixun, which earned critical acclaim across a handful of releases and secured a major-label deal for the album Lunatic Taxi. Following the group’s dissolution, additional collaborations with Ralph Thamar, Ray Lema, and others sustained his visibility until a featured appearance on the BBC’s millennium broadcast paved the way for his solo project Yakar, issued in 2003. The recording sessions for that album also initiated an enduring partnership with Carlos Santana, for whom Diop has since written material and served as an occasional support act.
