Biography
From 1968 through 1977, Randy's Studio 17 hosted numerous landmark reggae sessions, among them foundational LPs by The Wailers and Burning Spear. Vincent "Randy" Chin owned the facility, where Errol "E.T." Thompson supplied its signature engineering vision, later continued by George Philpott and Karl Pitterson. Beyond the many early reggae singles cut there, the studio also shaped the lean bass-and-drums aesthetic that defined dub. Chin's method differed from that of producer King Tubby by omitting echo, reverberation, delay, and other effects. Impact issued a ten-track dub collection in 1975 drawn from material taped at Randy's Studio 17 during the prior three years; billed to the Impact All-Stars, it spotlighted Aston Barrett on bass, Carlton Barrett and Sly Dunbar on drums, Tyrone Downie, Earl Lindo, and Augustus Pablo on keyboards, plus Tommy McCook on tenor saxophone. Blood And Fire, the British reggae imprint, restored the album to circulation in 1998, appending five previously unreleased cuts.
