The group known as In Pieces adopted the moniker Born to Resist upon its inception during 1998 within Glastonbury, Connecticut. The initial roster featured Steve Elin handling vocal duties alongside guitarists Ryan Horrigan and Scott, with Steve on bass and TJ behind the drums, creating a sound rooted in the most intense aspects of hardcore while retaining melodic elements. A shift in personnel occurred during February 2000 as Scott assumed lead vocal responsibilities, prompting the departures of both Horrigan and Elin, whose positions were filled by Val and Ryck on guitar. Following the acquisition of a recording contract from Sike Records, the ensemble released its debut single titled "&Brick Wall Stare" later that same year. The track garnered notable praise across the United States as well as in European and Japanese markets. Subsequent efforts included the production of a split release alongside Craig under the title How to Make a Human Heart, further elevating their status within the regional music community. In 2001, after inking an agreement with Escape Artist Records, In Pieces proceeded to the recording facility for work on their anticipated first full-length album.
