Biography
Hailing from Brighton, Sanj Sen performs under the Indian Ropeman alias, which he derived from a 1960s recording by Julie Driscoll. Frequent tours have taken Ropeman to clubs and festivals, where he has shared stages with British hip-hop acts and indie-rock outfits alike. Critics have characterized his style as a potent blend of Indian-influenced breakbeat, sitar funk, hip-hop, and dance. Drawing on his command of synths, sequencers, and samplers, he has issued multiple singles on the Skint Records imprint, among them “Dog in the Piano,” “66 Meters,” and “Sunshine of Your Love.” Live sets sometimes incorporate a scratch DJ, drummer, and guitarist for additional support. The year 1999 saw the arrival of his debut album, Elephant Sound. This bass-heavy collection features standout tracks such as “Dominant Tonic,” “Stand Clear,” and “Your Own Enemy.”
