Biography
Indigo Sparke emerged as a singer-songwriter whose delicate, introspective songwriting and airy voice aligned naturally with the intimate textures of indie folk. The Australian artist issued her first recording, the Nightbloom EP, in 2016. Her debut full-length, echo, reached listeners in 2021 after sessions overseen by Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker and Andrew Sarlo. The follow-up, Hysteria, appeared the next year under Aaron Dessner’s guidance and expanded her palette with denser, more forceful guitar arrangements.
She entered the world in Sydney as the child of two musicians and received her name from Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo.” Early exposure to Joni Mitchell and Neil Young shaped her sensibilities; after completing studies at a performing-arts high school and an acting conservatory, she took up guitar in her early twenties. Sparke soon integrated herself into the local circuit and issued Nightbloom in 2016. A 2017 Australian support run with Big Thief led to her South by Southwest debut and an American tour two years later.
Tracked across Italy, Los Angeles, and Figure 8 Studio in New York City, echo appeared on Sacred Bones in early 2021. Sparke, Lenker, and Sarlo shared production duties while Phil Weinrobe handled engineering and mixing. By the time she finished its richly layered successor, she had settled in New York. Working again with Dessner—known for his work with the National and Taylor Swift—she released Hysteria in late 2022.
