Biography
Detroit-based trio Infinite River creates expansive, tranquil mostly instrumental psychedelia built from soft, hazy guitar layers and sustained drones on harmonium and tanpura. Veterans of the Michigan scene, the musicians previously performed with His Name Is Alive, Slumber Party, Detroit Cobras, and numerous other acts. Before launching their own catalog as Infinite River, the musicians issued an album alongside folk troubadour Ethan Daniel Davidson under the name Seedsmen to the World; their first two Infinite River LPs, Prequel and Space Mirror, then surfaced in 2023, followed by the harder-rocking third album Tabula Rasa in 2024.
Guitarists Gretchen Gonzales, formerly of Slumber Party and Universal Indians, and Joey Mazzola, known from Detroit Cobras and Sponge, form the core alongside Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive, who handles harmonium and tanpura. Drummer and percussionist Steve Nistor, whose past collaborators include Gnarls Barkley and Sparks, completes the lineup. During the COVID-19 lockdown the four began laying down relaxed yet tightly focused melodic drone-rock instrumentals at a home studio in Birmingham, Michigan. They simultaneously reunited with frequent collaborator Ethan Daniel Davidson for the 2022 Seedsmen to the World album, which featured spaced-out readings of songs by Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Birdman issued the debut Infinite River album Prequel in March 2023; the gentler follow-up Space Mirror arrived that August. Tabula Rasa, released the next year, shifted toward heavier, more propulsive territory that touched on hard rock and dream pop.
