From their base in New York City, Innov Gnawa delves into the ancient practices of Gnawa, Moroccan traditional music grounded in ceremonial verses alongside entrancing beats and movement. Composed of Moroccan natives now residing abroad, the ensemble released their debut album under the same name during 2016, with Lila appearing five years afterward via the Daptone imprint focused on soul music. By incorporating additional African and Latin rhythmic elements, the group has performed at prominent NYC spots including Lincoln Center and the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Samir LanGus originated the project back in 2014, with much of Innov Gnawa's style depending on maalem Hassan Ben Jaafer. Within Gnawa customs, this role belongs to an expert player directing performances at lila gatherings, which involve collective festive evenings. Elements of Gnawa's unrefined percussive essence stem partly from the descendants of enslaved Africans and military personnel who gradually assimilated into Moroccan society. Residing as expatriates in New York, Innov Gnawa infuse Gnawa traditions with influences drawn from diverse African heritages plus Latin beats. The 2016 self-titled release received a Grammy nomination, extending their recognition past the local world music community. They partnered with Daptone Records, the Brooklyn outfit specializing in funk and soul, for the next album in 2021. Lila, tracked during one five-hour period, conveys the direct energy behind Innov Gnawa's mesmerizing style.
