German producer Insect O. specializes in dub techno marked by inviting analog warmth. Drawing from Detroit’s foundational techno as well as Berlin’s Basic Channel aesthetic, these relaxed, trance-inducing pieces provide ideal listening for listeners pursuing imaginary cosmic voyages without leaving their chairs.

Oliver Hartmann, born in Dresden and not to be mistaken for the Rüsselsheim metal guitarist and singer of the same name, first embraced electronic music as a teenager after regularly hearing a prominent early-’90s radio broadcast. He began collecting records and producing his own material at fourteen. By the late ’90s he held the resident-DJ post at the underground Flugzeugwerft club and, in 1998, founded the Etui label. The imprint soon became a key outlet for dub-techno collectors, issuing material by Mentalic, Alec Troniq, and Monomood among others. It also hosted a steady stream of his own EPs, two of the most prominent being 2012’s “Birds Over Hong Kong” and the 2013 follow-up “Bondi Dub.” Extensive travels throughout Asia, Australia, and South America strongly shaped his musical direction. Additional tracks surfaced on Atypical Farm, Etoka Shapes, and Biotop, while collaborations with Pro.Ton, Matschiste, Alex Carbo, and Australia’s Echo Inspectors produced the “Bourne Dub” and “Bribie Dub” singles for the Primary Colours label. In 2018 he delivered his debut album, Atacama. Prompted by a lengthy drive across the celebrated desert region of Chile, Bolivia, and Peru, the record retained the polished, classic dub-techno character that defines his catalog.
