Born in Rockfield, South Carolina, in 1939, Sammie Moore first took up the organ during his youth. He devoted his early attention to boogie-woogie and gospel before shifting toward blues during a period of performances in Miami, Florida. In 1959 he assembled his initial group, and while living in Memphis he earned his stage name after securing his keyboard atop an ironing board. Though he at first disliked the moniker, he later embraced it by distributing ironing boards to audiences during his concerts. Recordings bearing his name have surfaced on Holiday Inn, Atlantic, Styletone, and Board, while his stage shows blend vigorous blues with jazz. Among his theatrical gestures is performing inside a tank filled with water. He currently resides in New Orleans.
