Biography
After relocating to Baltimore, Maryland in 1976, Colombia-born vocalist and accordion player Ivan Cuesta launched the tradition-rooted ensemble Ivan Cuesta And His Baltimore Vallenatos, drawing from vellenato—an accordion and percussion form of dance music that merges Spanish, African, and Indian influences. The six-piece outfit, sometimes billed as Ivan Cuesta Y Sus Vallenatos, has gradually absorbed outside elements such as Tex-Mex and Zydeco while remaining firmly grounded in traditional northern Colombian dance music.
