Biography
Born Barrie Authors on 7 July 1933 in Ottawa, Canada, the one-time manager of Blue Mink and Ocean later concentrated on writing songs. Early in 1976 he teamed with Terry Britten to create ‘Where’s The Reason’ for Glen Campbell. After the pair forwarded a demo to the artist’s producer, the suggestion came back that Barrie should cut the track himself—an attempt that yielded no commercial result. Unfazed, he issued his own rendition of the country ballad ‘No Charge’ on the self-founded Power Exchange imprint, which carried an uncredited vocal from Vicki Brown and climbed straight to number 1 on the UK charts. A follow-up reissue of ‘Where’s The Reason’ again failed to register. Power Exchange secured one further UK Top 20 entry in December 1977 with ‘Who’s Gonna Love Me’ by the Imperials (without Little Anthony), after which the company folded. Barrie headed home to Canada and sought to revive the music-publishing, artist-management and agency activities that had occupied him throughout the 1960s. In 1980 he crossed back to the UK to record ‘You Can’t Win ‘Em All’ under his own name and ‘It’s Only A Game’ with English football manager Brian Clough; both tracks appeared on MCA late that year.
