Biography
Jabari Johnson balances his work as a session and backing guitarist with a solo career in contemporary gospel, where his sound blends rock, modern R&B, and worship elements. His first album under his own name, Day of Redemption, arrived in 2019 while he was still playing in Bishop T.D. Jakes' church band.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Johnson began singing and performing music at age three. By the time he turned eight he and his brother Nicholas Johnson had put together the vocal quartet the Johnson Brothers, an act that later appeared on bills with Lee Williams and the Canton Spirituals. He went on to serve as lead guitarist at The Potter's House in Dallas, where his performances included appearances alongside church founder T.D. Jakes as well as gospel chart-topping artists such as Kirk Franklin, Tori Kelly, and Ricky Dillard.
Johnson issued his debut solo single, "You Are Holy," in 2015; that same year he contributed guitar to Kim Burrell's album From a Different Place and handled additional session dates. His next solo releases, "More of You" (featuring Carvena Jones & Tela) and "You're Good" (featuring Michael Dixon), came out in 2016, followed by recording sessions with Ricky Dillard and JJ Hairston on their 2017 projects. In 2018 his guitar playing appeared on Tori Kelly's gospel number one Hiding Place, and he co-wrote a song for Cadillac Muzik's album Lac Gospel. Johnson's first full-length solo effort, Day of Redemption, was released in 2019 on Light Records.
