American actor, philanthropist, rapper, and fashion designer Jaden Christopher Syre Smith merges alternative hip-hop elements in ways that attract listeners from both rap and rock audiences. His early visibility came through film roles alongside his father, Will Smith, yet he carved out a distinct path in the 2010s by releasing several installments in his Cool Tape mixtape series and issuing his debut full-length project, Syre, whose platinum-certified single “Icon” stood out prominently. The 2019 release ERYS reached number 12 on the Billboard 200, and the Cool Tape series concluded with CTV3: Cool Tape Vol. 3 in 2020.

Born in Malibu, California, to Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, the artist made his screen debut in his father’s 2006 film Pursuit of Happyness and later shared the screen with him again in 2013’s After Earth. Additional credits include the remakes The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Karate Kid, the latter featuring Jackie Chan. Following his parents into music, he first appeared on Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” in 2010. Two years afterward he delivered his initial mixtape, The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape, Vol. 1, shaped by the influences of Kid Cudi and Purity Ring; the atmospheric rap/R&B set included contributions from OmArr, T-Coles, Josiah Bell, AcE, and his sister Willow. CTV2 followed in 2014 and spotlighted the track “PCH.”

Beyond acting as Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling in the series The Get Down, Smith supplied two songs to its 2016 soundtrack. The singles “Watch Me,” reminiscent of Kid Cudi, and the trap-rap cut “Batman” surfaced the next year and formed part of the Roc Nation LP SYRE, which featured A$AP Rocky on “Breakfast” and Raury on “Falcon.” The track “Icon” gained viral traction and climbed into the Top Three of the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. Throughout 2017 he joined Blackbear and Fall Out Boy on a U.S. tour.

In 2018 he released the follow-up Syre: The Electric Album, containing the Lil Pump-inspired trap number “Ghost” produced with Christian Rich, along with the further mixtape installment The Sunset Tapes: A Cool Tape Story. After offering the Erys Is Coming EP as preview material, he unveiled the more aggressive sophomore album ERYS the subsequent year; the emotionally charged project landed just outside the Billboard 200’s Top Ten and incorporated guest appearances from Tyler, The Creator, Kid Cudi, A$AP Rocky, Trinidad James, Lido, and Willow.

Outside recording and acting, Smith co-established the eco-friendly bottled-water company JUST Water, while his JUST Goods initiative teamed with a Flint, Michigan church to introduce a mobile filtration unit capable of lowering lead and additional impurities. He also founded the apparel label MSFTSrep and served as the face of Louis Vuitton’s spring and summer collections in 2016. Music returned in July 2020 via the single “Cabin Fever,” which appeared on CTV3: Cool Tape Vol. 3; the trilogy’s final chapter included the Justin Bieber collaboration “Falling for You.” The standalone track “Bye” followed in 2021.
