Award-winning arranger and producer Jaime Alem has lent his talents to Maria Bethânia, Sueli Costa, Moreira da Silva, Dicró, and Bezerra da Silva. As an instrumentalist he has appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York, NY, Royal Albert Hall and Royal Drury Lane in London, Chatelet and Olympia in Paris, France, and Coliseu in Lisbon, Portugal. His songs have been interpreted by Maria Bethânia, Elba Ramalho, Tarancón, and additional artists. In 2001 he made his first appearance as a featured instrumental performer, presenting original material with a small orchestra at SESC/Rio Arte in Rio de Janeiro.

He entered the profession at age sixteen alongside Jota Morais, Jurim Moreira, and fellow musicians from the State of São Paulo. After composing incidental music for stage productions, including Maria Clara Machado’s Pluft, O Fantasminha, he released two albums in the 1970s with his wife Nair Cândia and became an outspoken advocate for independent production and political amnesty. His first collaboration with Bethânia took place in 1982 when he performed as an instrumentalist in the show Nossos Momentos; from 1985 onward he served as musical director for her concerts. In that capacity he arranged and produced the gold-certified Memória da Pele (1989), the Sharp-prize-winning Maria Bethânia 25 anos, and Olho-D’Água, for which the Association of Art Critics of São Paulo named him Best Arranger of the Year in 1992.
