During his Boston high school years, Jake Mandell first explored electronic music production, a pursuit that later earned him recognition among listening techno's most promising talents through well-received albums on Worm Interface and Force Inc. While also training in classical piano and jazz, he pursued a biochemistry degree at college, with enzyme structures as his focus. That scientific background unexpectedly aligned with his musical path, as Mandell soon modeled his tracks on the intricate software programs designed for protein visualization. Following an initial single on his self-run Primedeep imprint, he issued his debut proper release, the 1997 Midwest EP, whose title nodded to his relocation in Minneapolis. His full-length introduction Parallel Processes, paired with the Placekick EP, arrived in early 1999 and drew acclaim within experimental electronics for skillfully merging detailed effects programming with resonant grooves, prompting parallels to programming innovators such as Autechre. Subsequent output appeared on Pitchcadet, Carpark, and Kodama, the last a complete album, ahead of his next major effort, the increasingly austere Quondam Current, which Force Inc released in 2000. Early the following year, Carpark put out Love Songs for Machines.
