Biography
Originating in the West Indies, Boston rapper Jake the Snake (aka J the S) relocated from Nevis to the New England region during childhood. Merging the cadence of a dancehall DJ with the intensity of a fierce New York MC, he took up rhyming near age 16 and refined his craft in Boston’s underground hip-hop battle circuit. Little attention greeted his debut album The Arrival after its 2004 release, yet he resurfaced in 2006 with the favorably received Strategy of the Crown LP, which included guest spots from Ras Kass and Devin the Dude. The corresponding singles “Kilograms (I Know)” and “Crabs in a Barrel” both registered on CMJ and other college-radio playlists that year. A string of mixtapes followed over the next couple of years until the Boston MC delivered his third full-length, The Last Days, in 2008.
