Singer/songwriter James Angell launched his recording efforts amid the Portland, OR, indie rock community in the early '90s. Membership in the pop outfit Nero's Rome led to the 1995 album Togetherly, yet the group dissolved once a pair of major-label agreements collapsed. Deeply discouraged, Angell constructed a cabin in the woods outside Portland and relocated there alongside his family, where he started shaping the songs that would form his first solo project. Cut in his personal studio, Private Player blended classic and contemporary strains of psychedelia with folk, jazz, and pop ingredients while incorporating contributions from Tony Lash (ex-Heatmiser), Eric Matthews, Daniel Riddle (King Black Acid), onetime Nero's Rome colleague Tod Morrisey, and several relatives. PsychEclectic issued Private Player during summer 2002.
