Biography
Ontario singer/songwriter James Gordon ranks among the better-known figures in Canadian folk, yet wider North American listeners still link him most readily to his role as founder of the influential trio Tamarack. He remained with the group until stepping aside for its 2000 album Spirit and Stone, after which he devoted himself entirely to an array of independent projects. His earliest experience came alongside the folk-rock band Maple Sugar, and throughout his Tamarack years he balanced group commitments—world tours, roughly fourteen albums, and frequent radio and television spots—with an expanding solo catalog. That parallel path has so far yielded more than fifteen individual releases, ranging from children’s recordings to socially aware contemporary folk, establishing him as a remarkably productive writer and arranger whose songs have been interpreted by everyone from the Cowboy Junkies to Al Simmons.
Gordon moves comfortably across guitar, piano, banjo, and mandola, lending his agreeable though understated voice to an eclectic mix of acoustic textures. The same adaptability has made him a frequent choice for scoring and arranging duties in television, radio, and theater, while he has also explored directing and acting. Beyond those fields he has created pieces for orchestras and choirs and prepared instructional material aimed at young audiences. He maintains an ongoing presence on Canadian airwaves and continues to write songs that honor the history and landscapes of his country.
