Rhyme or Reason, a 2000 solo release, highlights James Walker's command of mallet percussion, and universal purchases from everyone who had already witnessed his playing would have pushed sales into seven figures. That audience amounted to anyone who had spent time near radios or discos throughout the Gloria Gaynor period. James Walker supplied the conga parts on Gaynor's signature recording "I Will Survive." At an international gathering devoted to music's role as an affective replacement for aggression, a typically measured psycho-musicologist likened each strike on Walker's drumhead to striking an unfaithful partner.

Such expressive range, whether actual or projected, from percussion instruments has secured ongoing engagements with groups such as the Salsoul Orchestra, Silver Convention, and the Trammps. His session history reaches back to the latter 1970s, encompassing contributions to Fat Larry's Band and the 1978 Grace Jones album Fame. Multiple other percussionists share the name, among them the ex-Public Image Ltd. drummer, so care should be taken to avoid conflating them. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
