Born on 22 April 1948 in Copenhagen, Denmark, composer and pianist Kaspersen produces wry, quirky tunes shaped by the influences of Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver and Abdullah Ibrahim. Performing regularly at the jazzhouse Montmartre in Copenhagen during 1963/4 under the name Dollar Brand, Ibrahim joins the others in drawing strong roots from Black church music, a link that may explain Kaspersen’s pull toward the funky dimensions of American jazz. His writing and playing steer clear of mere pastiche or antiquarian seriousness, instead offering a measure of ironic humour that engages both intellect and body. Kaspersen has created works for the Danish Radio Big Band and for theatre while also appearing alongside poets; he continues to record regularly with his own ensembles, whether large or small.
