A Canadian pianist and educator, Jane Coop grew up in Calgary studying piano under Alexandra Munn and Gladys Egbert. She completed four years of instruction with Anton Kuerti at the University of Toronto before receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1972. A scholarship then supported studies with Peter Feuchtwanger in London during 1972–1973. Graduate work followed at the Peabody Conservatory under Leon Fleisher, leading to a master’s degree in piano performance in 1974; she continued working with Fleisher until 1976. That same year she captured first prize in the Washington International Piano Competition, earned an award at the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and advanced to the finals of the Munich International Piano Competition in 1977. Her orchestral engagements have included appearances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She has appeared at Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Beijing Concert Hall, the Bolshoi Hall in St. Petersburg, and many additional venues. From 1980 until 2012 Coop served on the faculty of the University of British Columbia’s School of Music. In 2012 she was named a Member of the Order of Canada.
