Biography
Jane Lee Hooker bears no relation to the blues-boogie icon John Lee Hooker. Instead, the name belongs to a New York City quintet devoted to sustaining the high-volume lineage of electric blues. Velocity, intensity, and technical command define their approach, lending the music a confrontational edge despite its deep immersion in blues-rock conventions.
The group came together in 2013 when vocalist Dana "Danger" Athens joined guitarists Tracy Hightop and Tina "T-Bone" Gorin, bassist Hail Mary Z, and drummer Melissa "Cool Whip" Houston. Hightop and Gorin had previously played together in Helldorado; after that band dissolved, Gorin joined Bad Wizard while Hightop moved on to Nashville Pussy. Once those projects ended, the two guitarists reunited, recruiting Hail Mary Z first, followed by Houston and Athens. In the years that followed, Jane Lee Hooker maintained a steady performance schedule in New York City as well as in California and Texas, building enough recognition to share stages with veteran rock acts such as Death Valley Girls and Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes.
The band signed with Ruf Records in 2015 and released its debut album, No B!, the following spring. Two years after that, again on Ruf Records, they issued their second album, Spiritus.
