Born on January 11, 1958, in Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland, Janet Russell has earned equal recognition for her work alongside Sisters Unlimited and for her own individual stage appearances. After beginning in the Edinburgh club circuit, she later backed prominent performers across the Edinburgh Folk and Fringe Festivals between 1980 and 1983. Additional partnerships with Christine Kydd led to joint appearances on the BBC program Folk on 2 as well as the 1987 release Janet Russell & Christine Kydd, issued by Greentrax Records. Her debut solo album, Gathering the Fragments, appeared on Harbourtown Records the following year; the recording received favorable notice and secured rotation on both folk and mainstream stations. Russell also contributed to Les Barker’s 1997 album The Stones of Callanish. Although she still produces occasional solo projects, the greater share of her schedule remains devoted to performances with Sisters Unlimited.
