A quartet from London, these musicians had already spent several years playing together before emerging abruptly within a British scene crowded by fledgling guitar bands that shared tastes for canyon rock, space rock, and sturdy 1970s singer/songwriter balladry; among them were fellow Brits Delta, Mojave 3, Four Storeys, Goldrush—formerly known as Whispering Bob—and Scottish guitar-rock groups such as Teenage Fanclub together with labelmates the Cosmic Rough Riders. Its roster draws on former members of Scala, Seefeel, and the Australian shoegazer band Jupiter. Their debut full-length album, I Heard Myself in You, was produced by the band alongside Mads Bjerke, who as of early 2001 was also co-producing tracks by Spiritualized.
