Beginning in the mid-1980s, when Juan Atkins adopted the name Model 500, Detroit electro producers developed a habit of concealing their identities behind cryptic aliases that left audiences speculating about the person behind each project. Japanese Telecom joined this eclectic lineup of oddly titled acts from the city, a group that already included Ectomorph, Cybotron, Dopplereffekt, AUX 88, Drexicya, and Adult. Rather than following the prevailing local approach of building shadowy, ominous analog funk driven by classic techno synths, Japanese Telecom weaves pop-culture references drawn from Japanese themes into dense, playful collages of eccentric rhythms. The resulting mood feels unexpectedly buoyant and open, lowering the barrier for listeners. This emphasis on inviting melodies and accessible warmth echoes J. Burger’s output under the Modernist moniker, both artists opting for melodic directness that runs counter to the genre’s usual severity. The project first appeared in late 1999 via a vinyl-only, self-titled EP on the fledgling Detroit imprint Intuit-Solar. That same label subsequently issued a 12-inch featuring remixes from the Men from PACK (also known as I-F), John Selway, DJ Assault, and Perspects, then combined the original EP and the remix record onto a single compact disc in fall 2000.
