Canada's Jasmyn, previously the frontwoman of Juno-nominated indie rock band Weaves, channels an unfettered creative impulse into solo work that feels both reflective and releasing. Her debut album under her own name, the 2022 release In the Wild, was produced by John Congleton and layered elements as varied as harpsichord, synthesizers, timpani, and distorted guitar.

While living in Toronto at the time, Jasmyn Burke formed Weaves in 2013 alongside guitarist Morgan Waters, bassist Zach Bines, and drummer Spencer Cole. The band emerged after Burke and Waters began exchanging song ideas following Waters's attendance at one of her solo performances; once the rhythm section joined, the quartet quickly established itself within the city's thriving indie circuit and moved straight into the studio. Their first single, "Hulahoop," appeared at the close of April 2013, with a six-track self-titled EP arriving the following April. Securing a joint deal with Brooklyn's Kanine Records and Toronto's Buzz Records, the group issued its full-length debut, also titled Weaves, in June 2016. Strong showings at SXSW that year generated widespread acclaim across North America, particularly for Burke's commanding stage presence, and the record earned both a 2017 Polaris Music Prize shortlist placement and a Juno nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. Their follow-up, Wide Open, came out in October 2017 and secured another Juno nod along with a spot on the 2018 Polaris shortlist.

Seeking a slower tempo and an individual artistic lane, Burke exited Weaves in 2020 and moved to Hamilton on Lake Ontario. Amid the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic she devoted several months to new songwriting, then began collaborating—initially from a distance—with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton on what would become her first solo record. She later joined him in Los Angeles for in-person sessions in 2021 and inked deals with ANTI- in the United States and Royal Mountain Records in Canada. The two labels issued the finished project, In the Wild, credited solely as Jasmyn, in June 2022.
