Jason Loewenstein, a Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, first earned notice through his roles in the indie rock bands Sebadoh and Fiery Furnaces. He has also contributed session performances and issued two solo albums: At Sixes and Sevens in 2002 and, fifteen years afterward, Spooky Action in 2017.

Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, he received an invitation in 1989 from Eric Gaffney and Dinosaur Jr.'s Lou Barlow to join Sebadoh shortly after that project's first two lo-fi releases. Loewenstein debuted with the group on 1991's Sebadoh III, supplying several original songs while performing on bass, drums, and guitar. After Gaffney exited in 1993, his input grew on Bakesale (1994), which contained five of his compositions. The 1999 Sebadoh album preceded an extended band hiatus.

During the break, Loewenstein recorded his debut solo album, At Sixes and Sevens, handling every instrument and the production himself; Sub Pop released it in 2002. In 2003, Barlow and Loewenstein toured as a duo supported by drum tracks. Loewenstein joined the Brooklyn band Fiery Furnaces in 2005 on bass and guitar and engineered their albums Remember and I'm Going Away. The original Sebadoh trio of Barlow, Gaffney, and Loewenstein reunited in 2007 and toured the U.S. and Europe.

Alongside his work with Sebadoh and Fiery Furnaces, he played drums on Lou Barlow's EMOH, Will Oldham's Viva Last Blues, and Brett Eugene Ralph's Kentucky Chrome Review. Fourteen years after Sebadoh's prior album, Loewenstein, Barlow, and Bob D'Amico recorded the band's eighth release, Defend Yourself, issued in 2013; it entered the Billboard "New Alternative Artists" chart at number one despite the group being in its third decade. Loewenstein resumed his solo career with the 2017 album Spooky Action.
