Philadelphia, Pennsylvania natives Javelina, whose name is pronounced ha-va-lE-na, came together in late 2005 when alumni of area acts such as LickGoldenSky, Smut, and Otophobia joined forces. They shaped a sound that fused the sludgy doom of Acid Bath and Eyehategod, the savage metal assault of High on Fire, and the crustcore directness of His Hero Is Gone. After signing with Translation Loss, the band issued its self-titled debut album to critical praise in 2008, then delivered the follow-up Beasts Among Sheep the next year; among its honors, the record earned a spot on Decibel Magazine’s list of the Top 40 metal albums of 2009. The lineup features Chubbrock on vocals and guitar, Mike B on guitar and vocals, Herb on bass, and Joe on drums.
