Javier García’s background, with roots stretching across Spain, Cuba, and Ireland, likely shaped the boundary-blurring sound that has earned widespread critical praise. He entered the world in Spain, where a Cuban father and Irish mother raised him until he turned thirteen; from there he spent two years in Ireland before settling in Miami and embedding himself in its vibrant Latin music community. During high school he launched a band alongside Jorge Moreno, the 2002 Latin Grammy recipient for Best New Artist, and Aramis Lourie, the entrepreneur behind several Miami indie-rock venues. García’s first recording, the self-titled album issued by Fonovisa in 1997, generated early attention through the singles “Tranquila” and “A Casa,” prompting the label to issue a companion remix collection the following year.

After that initial burst of activity, García stepped away from the studio for seven years. He resurfaced in 2005 with the album 13, released on Universal Music Latino. Advance copies generated enthusiastic commentary from reviewers who highlighted the record’s eclectic blend of son, calypso, salsa, reggae, rock en español, rap, funk, and Latin pop. Much of the attention centered on the involvement of producer Gustavo Santaolalla, already celebrated for his work with Café Tacuba, Juanes, and Julieta Venegas. The well-received project effectively rekindled García’s presence in the Latin music landscape.
