Biography
Born on 12 March 1957 in Brentwood, Essex, England, Turner works as a singer and songwriter who first surfaced within the folk circuit toward the close of the 1980s. Orphaned at an early age, he was raised by his grandparents in Wickford, Essex. His path through the folk scene included performances spanning folk, country, and rock before circling back to folk, an experience that shaped both his compositional approach and his stage delivery. In 1988 he created the rock ‘n’ roll musical Billy Buckett, which enjoyed a two-year run at the New Hereford Theatre. Already noted for his commanding presence onstage, he was selected to open for Fairport Convention on their 1991 Winter Tour after the release of Movements In Architecture. The added visibility led to appearances at prominent UK folk festivals and numerous clubs across the circuit. During spring 1993 he performed in Texas, USA, before returning for the English festival season that summer. Among the many artists he has opened for are Jimmie-Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp, and Flaco Jiménez.
