Jay Thomas developed his skills across a wide range of brass and reed instruments after his father, a former jazz trumpeter who later became a pharmacist, urged him toward music. Although he began on trumpet, an impromptu decision to borrow a tenor saxophone during a dance-band engagement with a trumpet-tenor front line led him to adopt the horn; within weeks he was performing on tenor and soon added alto and soprano. While based in Boston he turned to flute because apartment rules prohibited practice on his other instruments.

Active since the 1960s, Thomas launched his professional work in rhythm-and-blues groups. After relocating to New York City in 1968 he studied with Carmen Caruso and performed with Machito’s orchestra, absorbing Latin rhythms from lead trumpeter Mario Bauza. Throughout the 1970s he lived in San Francisco and collaborated with pianist Jessica Williams and other West Coast musicians. In the 1980s he returned to Seattle, where his father had established a jazz club; there Thomas joined the house band and performed alongside Zoot Sims, Sonny Stitt, and Chet Baker.

He has appeared on more than fifty recordings as a sideman with Barney McClure, Slim Gaillard, Herb Ellis, Milo Peterson, David Friesen, and vocalists Katie King and Becca Duran. Demand for his services stems from his command of multiple instruments and his comfort across jazz idioms ranging from swing to acid jazz. As a leader he has issued five albums, one each on the McVouty, Jazz Focus, Hep, Stash, and Discovery labels. In 1996 he received the Golden Ear Award for Best Instrumentalist, an honor he shared with bassist Phil Sparks. Thomas continues to reside in Seattle, where he works with several regional ensembles and regularly tours with his wife, vocalist Becca Duran.
