Biography
JD & the Straight Shot originated as an informal roots rock and Americana outfit headed by New York businessman and musician James Dolan, initially convening only for company outings. The project gradually coalesced around a stable core of JD, guitarist/vocalist Marc Copely, and bassist Byron House, augmented for live dates by guitarist JJ Appleton, violinist Mary Jo Stilp, vocalist/guitarist Erin McCarley, and percussionists Shawn Pelton and Everett Bradley. The group issued its charged debut album, Nothing to Hide, in 2005. Since that point the band has shared bills with such rock figures as the Eagles, the Allman Brothers Band, and ZZ Top while also placing the track “Can’t Make Tears” as the theme for AMC’s gritty Western series Hell on Wheels. Further releases comprise Right on Time (2008), Daily News Blues (2010), Can’t Make Tears (2011), Where I’ve Been (2014), Ballyhoo! (2016), and Good Luck and Good Night (2017).
