Biography
JD McPherson stands out for a powerfully resonant vocal style and a retro-leaning aesthetic rooted in 1940s R&B and 1950s rock & roll, establishing a singular presence across roots and Americana landscapes. His first major break arrived through the driving 2010 single "North Side Gal," taken from the debut album Signs & Signifiers. Teaming with bassist and producer Jimmy Sutton, he swiftly developed a devoted following while drawing acclaim for his soulful, analog sound. Later releases such as the 2015 album Let the Good Times Roll and 2017's Undivided Heart & Soul extended his vintage influences, incorporating increasingly bold partnerships with artists including Lucius, Dan Auerbach, and Nicole Atkins. After issuing the holiday collection Socks in 2018 and sharing stages with Nick Lowe as well as Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, he unveiled his fifth album, the surf rock-oriented Nite Owls.
Born in 1977 in rural Buffalo Valley, Oklahoma, McPherson absorbed an eclectic range of sounds during childhood, spanning traditional country, rockabilly, punk, and hip-hop. Though music remained a constant passion, he initially labored on the family cattle ranch, later completing a master's degree in Open Media at Tulsa University, where he taught and gained notice for video art installations. His classic approach attracted attention during performances with the Tulsa-based roots group the Starkweather Boys, leading Chicago retro-rock figure Jimmy Sutton to take notice. McPherson supported Sutton in several concerts before conceiving his own solo endeavor.
The solo debut Signs & Signifiers, produced by Sutton and featuring "North Side Gal," appeared on Hi-Style Records in 2010. Its video quickly spread online, and extensive touring helped expand McPherson's audience. Two years afterward, Rounder Records reissued Signs & Signifiers for broader reach, where it peaked at number 47 on the Billboard Rock Albums chart. That year also brought an invitation to open for British singer-songwriter Nick Lowe on West Coast dates.
A 2014 covers EP built anticipation ahead of the 2015 sophomore album Let the Good Times Roll, produced by Mark Neill. The set contained the single "Bossy" alongside "Bridgebuilder," co-written with the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, and reached number 17 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart. McPherson followed with the 2017 full-length Undivided Heart & Soul, tracked at Nashville's historic RCA Studio B under Lucius drummer Dan Molad's production and emphasizing fuzztone, 1960s-style R&B. The record featured contributions from Butch Walker, Parker Millsap, and Aaron Lee Tasjan, plus guest appearances by Lucius vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, Nicole Atkins, and the Raconteurs guitarist Jack Lawrence. Singles "Crying's Just a Thing That You Do" and "Lucky Penny" helped it return to the Top 20 of Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart.
McPherson's debut holiday project, Socks, emerged in 2018 with original rocking and humorous seasonal numbers rather than standards, prompting annual winter tours. Beyond headlining, he maintained an active schedule supporting established figures such as Nick Lowe and, in 2022, joined Robert Plant and Alison Krauss as lead guitarist while also serving as opener. In 2024 he released his fifth album, Nite Owls. Co-produced by McPherson and largely captured with drummer and engineer Alex Hall in Chicago, the record ventures into moody surf rock alongside excursions into 1970s glitter rock and twangy melodic pop.
