In 2004, art school companions Elin, Merete, Matt, and Anthony launched Je Suis Animal in Oslo, Norway. Their approach produced a fragile, echo-laden texture that recalled the work of My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, and the Shop Assistants. An early demo attracted the attention of Norwegian imprint Perfect Pop, which led the quartet to begin its first proper sessions under the label’s direction the next year. Until then, all prior work had occurred in makeshift home environments, so the adjustment to a professional setting proved awkward. Speaking with Eardrums in 2008, Anthony recalled, “We were only really comfortable playing together,” and added, “And so layering each instrument individually didn’t work for us at all.” On a friend’s recommendation, the band ultimately tracked its debut inside an abandoned community hall in Hedalen, Norway, capturing every part on an eight-channel deck and a small collection of microphones. The resulting album, Self-Taught Magic from a Book, appeared on Perfect Pop in 2008.
