Jean-Michel Cabrimol & La Mafia produced highly dynamic Antillean dance tracks by combining Jean-Michel Cabrimol's raw singing style with Phil Control's polished delivery over expansive orchestral setups and choral backing. Although rooted in zouk, the ensemble incorporates elements from Haitian traditions, Cuban salsa, and indigenous rhythms of the Antilles and Africa. The band originated in 1981 as a modest ensemble and took the stage in New York and Paris the following year. By November 1997, their lineup had grown to encompass trumpet, saxophone, flute, trombone, bugle, three violins, two guitars, congas, bongos, timbales, piano, bass, and drums.
