Biography
Born on 19 October 1960 in Paris, France, Pilc began studying piano at the age of ten and acquired most of his technique through independent practice. Over the years he collaborated closely with numerous French jazz figures as well as visiting international artists, among them John Abercrombie, Richard Bona, Michael Brecker, André Céccarelli, Roy Haynes, Daniel Humair, Dave Liebman, Michel Portal, Aldo Romano, Martial Solal, and Jean Toussaint. Worldwide touring followed, placing him in clubs, concert halls, and festivals across the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Eire. For a time he also served as musical director and pianist for Harry Belafonte. His first New York City engagements took place in 1995 at such established rooms as the Blue Note, Birdland, the Knitting Factory, and Sweet Basil. He later settled permanently in the city. Cardinal Points, issued in 2003, earned widespread notice when JazzTimes magazine named it one of the Top 50 Critics Picks Of The Year. Pilc functions as a commanding soloist whose style remains fiery, dramatic, and daring. He has likewise distinguished himself as a composer, creating scores for films and an array of jazz works that includes the extended piece ‘Trio Sonata,’ featured on the 2003 album Cardinal Points.
