The Jeanines emerged in the late 2010s as a Brooklyn duo whose music fuses the ramshackle drive of C-86-style guitar pop, the winsome grit associated with '90s noise pop acts, and the jangle of classic folk-rock. Singer/guitarist/songwriter Alicia Jeanine and bassist/drummer Jed Smith, the latter a veteran of My Teenage Stride, formed the project and paired Jeanine's wistful vocals and jangling guitar lines with the force of Smith's one-man rhythm section. Their first two demos appeared online in January 2018; the combination of Smith's established background and the songs' lively character brought immediate attention. Two additional tracks followed later that year, one a Dum Dum Girls cover, while the pair performed several shows throughout the New York City metro region. Legendary noise pop imprint Slumberland then issued the duo's debut album, The Jeanines, which Smith recorded and produced and which included a Siddeleys cover, in June 2019. When work on new material began, Jeanine had relocated to Massachusetts for employment, and pandemic restrictions further complicated joint sessions, so the pair exchanged files remotely and incorporated folk-rock and neo-psych elements into 2022's Don't Wait for a Sign.
