Born in California, Jeanne Black earned her status as a one-hit wonder by reaching the Top Ten on both the pop and country charts in 1960 with “He’ll Have to Stay,” an answer record to Jim Reeves’s “He’ll Have to Go.” She launched her professional singing career in 1956 as a regular performer on Cliffie Stone’s Hometown Jamboree television program. After departing the show in 1959, she worked club dates in Las Vegas and at Lake Tahoe, later forming a professional association with Billy Strange. The following year she joined the Capitol roster and issued the single that became her sole major success. Despite its strong performance, Black proved unable to produce any comparable follow-up recordings.
