Jed Davis, an indie rock singer/songwriter based on Long Island, launched his career via the 1994 demo tape Jed Has Too Much Free Time on His Hands, a 33-song collection. Creative, lengthy performances at Albany’s Mother Earth Cafe earned him a local audience and led him to form the Hanslick Rebellion in 1995; the ensemble issued its live album The Rebellion Is Here the next year. While active in the Rebellion, Davis stockpiled solo songs sufficient for more than three albums, many of which he later reworked with ex-bandmate Sean Gould on We’re All Going to Jail and Jed Davis Wastes 8 Years of His Life for Your Listening Pleasure. Following his relocation to Long Island, Davis and Gould established the band Collider; in mid-2000 J-Bird, Davis’ own label, put out the tribute album Everybody Wants to Be Like Jed, whose tracks included covers by Daniel Jonston, King Missile III, Brian Dewan, and Wesley Willis.
