Biography
Residing in Durham, North Carolina, Jeff Burkhart balances roles as a performer, teacher, and visual creator. Among his active endeavors are a gardening initiative shared with high-school students known as the “365ers,” a label earned because each has been barred from classes for a full year, and a parallel photography effort through which he imparts both camera technique and darkroom processes to the same participants.
He also leads two separate cohorts of young people considered at risk, guiding them through improvisational theater and personal writing exercises that let them examine their own conduct. He intends to extend this approach into conventional public-school settings. In addition, he teaches GED courses, where the daily atmosphere of enthusiasm and vitality remains a constant source of satisfaction.
Beyond these commitments, Burkhart accepts freelance assignments in writing, photography, and graphic design, recently completing promotional packages for several musical ensembles. His own compositions and performances draw on folk, blues, and old-time traditions, shifting between boisterous energy and quiet melancholy. Listeners can find him on a regular basis at cafés and street corners throughout the Durham–Chapel Hill region, and he is now organizing sessions for his debut recording.
These musical pursuits reached a focal point during his tenure at community radio station WFHB in Bloomington, Indiana, where he programmed shows devoted to jazz, electronica, bluegrass, and regional artists.
