From his upbringing amid the rural landscapes of Escanaba, Michigan, rustic singer/songwriter Jeff Krebs weaves Appalachian hominess into his customary Americana flourishes. Early listening to albums by AC/DC, Cheap Trick, and Elvis Costello helped form a musical vocabulary that he would later fuse with traditional elements alongside the work of beat writers. After numerous Kerouac-like jaunts across North and South America and stints in country-rock bands, including a brief link with Everclear's Art Alexakis in the Easy Hoes, all of which feed into the genealogy of his music, Krebs settled in San Francisco and began his solo career in 1994. By then the influence of songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt and Tom Waits had taken hold, allowing him to locate his own songwriting voice. Songs of Love and/or Death soon appeared, presenting power-trio renditions of folk-based songs interspersed with brief ventures down reggae and swing side roads. A leap forward arrived with 2000's Keep an Eye Out, advancing both musical and lyrical songcraft through an eclectic blend of the American pop and rock landscape, assisted by friends including Tom Waits' crony Ralph Carney. Outside solo work, Krebs pursues more heavily traditional sounds in bluegrass as a part-time member of the KLM Camp Band.
