Biography
Bassist and vocalist Jeffrey Runnings has sustained an extended career as a central figure in For Against, the veteran indie pop outfit that originated in Lincoln, Nebraska during 1984. From early on, the group anticipated later trends by bringing the atmospheric approach of British post-punk imprints such as 4AD and Factory to American audiences, thereby helping establish the foundation for the dream pop and shoegaze movements that would dominate much of the U.S. indie-rock landscape in the years that followed. Across the 1980s and 1990s the band issued multiple critically admired yet modestly circulated albums through Independent Project Records and Rainbow Quartz before shifting to Words on Music in the 2000s. Captured Tracks later compiled three of the ensemble’s initial releases into a vinyl box set in 2013. In 2016 Runnings, now using the shortened name Jeff, issued his first solo effort, Primitives & Smalls, on Saint Marie Records; the album extended the stylistic path he had pursued with For Against.
