Jeffrey Logan, performing under the name Jel, first took up the cornet in his youth, an experience he found far from enjoyable. After saving the necessary funds while still in high school, he purchased the SP 1200, the only drum machine and sampler he would ever own. From that point he channeled the bulk of his energy into beat-making. During his college years he held a position at the Northwestern University radio station, where he was introduced to MC Adam Drucker, better known as Doseone, and the two formed an immediate bond. Jel left school in 1996 to devote himself fully to music. Two years later Doseone issued his debut album, Hemispheres, on the fledgling Anticon label, including two tracks produced by Jel. The following year the pair released Them under the group name Themselves. Jel and Doseone also joined Alias, Sole, and Slug in Deep Puddle Dynamics to record Taste of Rain...Why Kneel?, which finally appeared in 2002. That same year Jel delivered his solo debut, Greenball, with 10 Seconds arriving several months afterward. The Meat and Oil EP followed in 2003. After Jel departed Mush, the label that had issued most of his solo material, for Anticon, Soft Money was released in 2006.
