A European sojourn after college left a lasting mark on Jen Elliot, much as it has for countless other young Americans. Once back in her hometown of Jacksonville, FL, the aspiring artist realized she needed to resume singing if she hoped to recapture the calm she had known while performing in high-school musicals. She took to the open-mike circuit, delivering her own songs completely unaccompanied, a daring move that soon prompted an even larger one. Elliot relocated to New York City and secured stage time at spots such as the Village Underground, Shine, and the Cutting Room. A recording of her Jacksonville sets eventually reached Trebor Lloyd at City Canyons, the New York-based publisher and advocate for independent artists. Elliot’s first release, The Secret’s Out, came out in October 2003, presenting a determined blend of rock, blues, and pop that the label labeled “RBP.”
