Hailing from Texas, Jennifer Holliday first captured widespread attention through her starring role in the Broadway production Your Arm's Too Short to Box with God. This opportunity opened the door to her breakthrough portrayal in Dreamgirls, the stage retelling of The Supremes' story. Her standout interpretation of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" drew particular notice and reached hit-single status in 1982. The exposure steered her toward a pop career, though she never again reached the same commercial peak. In 1985 she stepped back into theater with an appearance in Sing, Mahalia, Sing while continuing to issue pop albums alongside her Broadway work. Across both settings she remains a robust, resonant soul singer who delivers every line with forceful feeling and personal conviction.
