Biography
Born in British Columbia, the Canadian jazz vocalist has earned broad praise for both her emotionally charged phrasing and her skill at spontaneous invention. Training in jazz and operatic techniques with acclaimed figures including Sheila Jordan and Ranee Lee, she later incorporated “minsogak,” or traditional Korean folk music, into her artistic range. Ryan issued her first recording, How Do You Feel About That, on Go Play Records in 1996. Five years later she followed with the solo album Found, an effort rooted in longstanding forms yet marked by distinctive choices. Additional collaborations have placed her alongside Jordan O’Connor, Mary Margaret O’Hara, and Don Clark. While touring Japan, North America, and Europe, she has maintained ties to her origins by establishing a music workshop for secondary and college students in her hometown. Festival appearances have included the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and numerous other showcases.
