Biography
Born in 1954 in the London suburb of Beckenham, Jenny Evans has built a multifaceted career as a jazz vocalist, actress, and lyricist while once operating her own venue, Jenny's Place. Her credits encompass motion pictures, advertisements, German television programs, Broadway-style musicals, and dramatic theater productions.
After relocating to Munich in 1976 to pursue studies in music alongside English-language instruction, she fronted the ensemble Old Socks New Shoes during her student years. The group’s initial ragtime focus gradually gave way to classic jazz interpretations. Although her recorded output includes both self-penned material and standards spanning Gershwin through the Beatles, her warm timbre and fluid phrasing consistently steer selections toward jazz settings.
Evans issued her first album, Whisper Not, on ESM Records and Bell Music in 1988. Those same imprints followed with At Lloyd’s, recorded alongside the Rudi Martini Quartet, in 1993. Enja Records then presented Shiny Stockings in 1997, the swing-oriented Girl Talk in 1999, Gonna Go Fishin’ in 2001, and Nuages in 2004. Between sessions she maintained an active schedule of club dates, festival appearances, and tours across Europe, Germany, Australia, Russia, and Japan, releasing Christmas Songs near the end of 2005. Continuing her association with drummer Rudi Martini, she delivered Lunar Tunes on Enja in 2008.
Returning to ESM Records with woodwind player Felix Sapotnik and bassist Sven Faller, Evans unveiled Are You the Man? A New Peter Kreuder Song Book in 2010 and The Four Seasons of Love the following year. For 2016’s Be What You Want to Be on Edition Collage she revisited British pop and rock selections by the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, and Sting.
