Biography
Jeremiah Cymerman, born May 4, 1980, in North Carolina—with Athens, GA, also cited as his place of origin—resides in Brooklyn, NY, where he has immersed himself in the local avant-garde jazz community. As an unorthodox B-flat clarinetist favoring a D.I.Y. aesthetic, he pursues a deconstructionist method centered on improvisation that yields unpredictable, challenging music marked by abrupt shifts. His clarinet frequently passes through outboard analog electronic rigs that alter and obscure its natural tone. Early projects appeared on his own imprint, among them HCM Trio in 2005 and Blood Vessel in 2006. Solponticello Records issued Big Exploitation in 2007, for which Cymerman conducted a 13-piece big-band chamber orchestra. Tzadik Records, the label founded by John Zorn, released In Memory of the Labyrinth System in 2008. Cymerman has collaborated with Jessica Pavone, Nate Wooley, Ned Rothenberg, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, and additional figures within the scene.
