During the 1960s and 1970s, guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cole lent his talents to leading rock and roll figures such as Them, the Beach Boys, and the Byrds, while also serving as a session musician in Phil Spector’s Wrecking Crew. Across little more than two years, Cole and his band the Spacemen issued four albums of space-age surf music, the earliest of which was Outer Limits in 1963. As the decade advanced he played on the Byrds’ single “Mr. Tambourine Man”/“I Knew I’d Want You” and on Them’s self-titled album from 1965. He rejoined Roger McGuinn in 1972 for the latter’s first solo album; additional studio dates with Roger Miller, Chuck Howard, and Susie Allanson meanwhile pointed him toward a country-rock sound. Sundazed assembled his Spacemen recordings on the 1999 compilation Power Surf! The Best of Jerry Cole & His Spacemen.
