Jesús "El Rayo" Mendoza emerged as a charting vocalist and composer within Mexican regional music, forming part of the millennial cohort that introduced fresh sonic textures and structural innovations to norteño traditions. Born in Michoacán, Mexico, he arrived in the United States with his parents at the age of two and grew up in San Clemente, located in California's Orange County. From his earliest years, music dominated his pursuits, with Valentín Elizalde and Adan Sanchez serving as primary inspirations. At sixteen he secured his initial performance opportunity, funding a demo by borrowing two hundred dollars from his mother. Cut in a friend's home studio and limited to traditional material, the recording prompted him to press multiple CD-R copies for sale at the venue's merchandise stand. The evening proved sufficiently successful that he recovered his outlay, repaid his mother, retained an additional two hundred dollars for further copies, and attracted the notice of promoter Alex Henriquez from Perfect Touch Entertainment Company, after which his trajectory remained uninterrupted.

Alongside his new manager, Mendoza cultivated an online footprint across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, regularly uploading fresh material that occasionally included original compositions. Between 2013 and 2014 his tracks appeared on assorted compilations, while he performed at prominent events alongside Roberto Tapia, Banda el Limón, Larry Hernandez, and Banda el Recodo. To broaden his reach, Henriquez arranged a promotional agreement with Eddie Orjuela's Talent Uno and First Fila Entertainment. Through the combined efforts of these partners and his own persistence, Mendoza's digital following expanded to encompass fifteen fan clubs prior to securing a major-label contract. Fonovisa registered the mounting interest yet focused particularly on his songwriting, signing him late in 2014 and placing him in the studio. His debut self-written single for the imprint, "Aún Te Sigo Amando," reached the Top 30 of the Hot Latin Songs chart. Two additional singles followed that same year, one of them a collaborative reworking of the earlier track featuring J. Alvarez. During 2016, amid album preparation and touring commitments, he released "Mis Inicios," which registered on multiple charts as its video surpassed half a million views. "Si Te Vas No Ye Regresas" appeared in January 2017 as the advance single for his first full-length album.
